Portable Generator Maintenance Tips from Cumberland Power Equipment

At Cumberland Power Equipment, we know how important it is to have a reliable portable generator when you need it most. Whether you’re preparing for winter storms or powering equipment on the go, regular maintenance ensures your generator performs at its best. Here are our top tips to keep your portable generator running smoothly:

1. Check and Change the Oil

Oil is essential for keeping your generator’s engine running efficiently. Before each use, check the oil level and top it up if necessary. Change the oil after the first 5 - 8 hours of use, then follow a regular schedule of every 50 hours, or as outlined in your manual. Our team can help you choose the right oil for your generator.

2. Keep the Air Filter Clean

A dirty air filter can reduce performance and increase wear on the engine. Check the filter regularly and clean or replace it as needed. Not sure what filter your generator uses? We stock a wide range of parts and can help you find the perfect fit.

3. Maintain the Spark Plug

A properly functioning spark plug is crucial for easy starts and smooth operation. Inspect it every few months, cleaning or replacing it if necessary. Don’t hesitate to visit us for expert advice or a replacement plug.

4. Use a Fuel Stabilizer

Fuel can degrade over time, causing clogs and reducing efficiency. If you store your generator for more than a month, add a fuel stabilizer to prevent problems. For long-term storage, drain the fuel tank and run the generator until it stops to empty the carburetor. Or, use an engineered fuel for extended storage.

5. Check the Battery (for Electric Start Models)

Electric-start generators require a well-maintained battery. Check the charge regularly and clean the terminals to prevent corrosion. Batteries should be stored on a trickle charger or at least recharged every few months when not in use, Need a replacement battery or charger? We’ve got you covered.

6. Test Your Generator Regularly

Run your generator every few months for 15–20 minutes. This keeps the engine lubricated and ensures everything is in working order.

7. Store it Safely

When not in use, store your generator in a cool, dry place. Use a cover to protect it from dust and moisture. If you don’t have a cover, drop by our store to find one that fits.
